Retail Sales Rise 1% During the Month of January

After six consecutive months of weakening sales the retail sector reported an unexpected 1$ rise in sales.  According to a government report released today by the Commerce Department, retail sales rose 1% versus a drop of 3% this past December.

NetFlix’s Fall From Grace: Thrasher Predicts Another One

Yesterday Netflix shares were downgraded by Needham & Co. to underperform citing concerns that the DVD rental company may be overpriced.  Previously Netflix’s stock was valued at $30 - that’s $5 dollars higher than its current price now.  Analyst Charlie Wolf comments that the downgrade was due to ‘the questionable prospects’ of digital distribution.

Liz Claiborne to Cut 725 Jobs

Liz Claiborne Inc. (LIZ) said it will cut 8% of its work force, citing the ” highly uncertain” economic environment, as the struggling apparel maker continues to reduce costs amid a restructuring and continuing woes in the retail sector.
